2003–2004: The PayPal Mafia and the Post-9/11 World

The origins of Palantir stem from the ashes of 9/11 and the success of PayPal. Peter Thiel, fresh off the sale of PayPal to eBay, recognized that the fraud-detection algorithms they used to stop Russian cybercriminals could be repurposed for counter-terrorism.

Thiel co-founded the company with Joe Lonsdale, Stephen Cohen, Nathan Gettings, and his former Stanford law school classmate, Alex Karp—who stepped in as CEO.
